Op vrijdag 24 maart 2017 verzorgde Jan Noorlandt een gastcollege aan de Christelijke Hogeschool te Ede, met als titel “Vondsten en verhalen”. In dit college werd door Noorlandt dieper ingegaan op zijn bijzondere inspanningen, om door middel van schenkingen aan met name bibliotheken de ‘collectie Nederland’ uit te breiden en te verrijken. En het gaat om indrukwekkende aantallen. De Koninklijke Bibliotheek te Den Haag werd verblijd met het 10.000ste geschenk! En Jan Noorlandt voorziet inmiddels ook de Bijzondere Collecties van de UvA van een gestage stroom aanbiedingen, voornamelijk kaarten.
In een even geestig als lichtvoetig betoog schetste Jan Noorlandt zijn werkwijze. Bij talrijke kringloopbedrijven, tweedehands spullenwinkels, vrienden en bekenden op de gehele Veluwe is Noorlandt vaste klant. En men weet daar intussen ook waar de interesse van deze rasverzamelaar naar uitgaat. Het gaat hem juist niet om wat duur, bekend of bijzonder is, maar om het onooglijke, het veronachtzaamde, het alledaagse.
Wetenschappelijke bibliotheken hebben juist dit soort materiaal in het verleden geen plek waardig gekeurd in hun collecties, en ze deden dat destijds op goede gronden. Maar daar is men inmiddels wel anders over gaan denken. Daarom kan Jan Noorlandt specifiek op dit gebied in een leemte voorzien. En daar is ook interesse voor, omdat meer en meer het besef doordringt dat ook in juist dit soort documenten onze cultuur en het dagelijks leven weerspiegeld worden. Die zijn dus de moeite van het bewaren en het bestuderen waard.
Aldus blijft het actuele verleden steeds beter en nauwkeuriger voor het nageslacht bewaard. Jan Noorlandt vierde vooruitlopend hierop daarom nu al zijn eigen feestje. De door hem begiftigden spraken er onomwonden hun erkentelijkheid voor uit. En onderzoekers zullen hier in de toekomst ook dankbaar voor zijn.
