Aan het eind van de jaren ’60 verwierf de Amsterdamse Universiteitsbibliotheek de collectie ‘Amstelodamica’ van A.M. van de Waal. Hij werkte als archivaris bij een bank en bracht een van de grootste particuliere collecties betreffende Amsterdam bijeen. Zijn verzameling bestaat uit boeken, kaarten, foto’s, brieven en andere documenten. Na bijna vijftig jaar vereist goed beheer van deze collectie een andere ordening. Daarbij komt veel bijzonder materiaal opnieuw even aan het licht. Zoals bij voorbeeld fraai vormgegeven brochures, kaarten, omvangrijke uitbreidingsplannen en andere, verrassende publicaties betreffende Schiphol.

Allereerst valt op dat Schiphol niet alleen onze nationale luchthaven is, maar vooral ook een bezienswaardigheid op zichzelf. Ook wie dus niet per vliegtuig op reis ging kon per bus of ‘luxe motorboot’ op en neer naar Schiphol. Veel van de reclame-achtige brochures zijn vormgegeven door Fré Cohen. Met de felle kleuren, schreefloze belettering en foto-montages sluiten ze helemaal aan bij het beste wat in de jaren ’30 werd gemaakt, en dat wij nu rangschikken onder uitingen van de Nieuwe zakelijkheid.

Schiphol, de luchtvaart, vliegtuigen … hoezeer we het nu ook gewoon zijn gaan vinden om te reizen door de lucht, het is altijd nog omgeven met een vleug heroïek. Voor het drukwerk uit de jaren dertig, veertig en vijftig betreffende de vliegerij en Schiphol geldt dat des te meer. Min of meer parallel hieraan is de visie, die ten grondslag ligt aan publicaties over het toenemend belang van vervoer door de lucht en de maatregelen die dat vergt voor aanpassing en vernieuwing. De Van de Waal-collectie bevat tal van publicaties die – vaak vele jaren van te voren – ingaan op noodzakelijke uitbreiding van de bestaande luchthaven. Het fundament van dit alles wordt gevormd door cijfers, grafieken, tabellen en vaak fraai uitgevoerde kaarten.
Een ander aspect dat in dit gelegenheidsdrukwerk telkens weer wordt benadrukt is de toename van het aantal passagiers dat via Schiphol reist. Van nul in 1920 tot 65.000 passagiers in 1938, zo wordt trots vermeld in de brochure ‘De groei van Schiphol’. De Tweede Wereldoorlog was uiteraard een lelijke en trieste onderbreking, maar treffend als tijdsbeeld is de tekst van een brochure uit 1946: “Schiphol na anderhalf jaar bevrijding: Van puinhoop tot wereldluchthaven”, gevolgd door trotse cijfers: eerste halfjaar 1938 27.875 passagiers, eerste halfjaar 1946 116.226 passagiers. Ter vergelijking: het aantal reizigers dat Schiphol in 2016 aandeed bedroeg meer dan 63 miljoen.
