Sprekende kaarten zijn kaarten die met weinig middelen veel informatie overbrengen. Het is voor ons vandaag de dag normaal om statistische gegevens weer te geven met behulp van geografische kaarten.
Temperatuurafwijkingen, februari 2016
Neem bijvoorbeeld een kaart die aangeeft hoezeer de temperatuur wereldwijd afweek van normaal gedurende de laatste februarimaand. Met een kaart als deze wordt in één oogopslag duidelijk hoezeer de temperatuur in deze maand afweek van het langjarige gemiddelde. Men moet bedenken dat het alternatief een tabel zou zijn met daarin voor elk waarnemingsstation de afwijking in cijfers. Het behoeft weinig betoog dat een dergelijke (uitgebreide) tabel niet veel indruk zou maken.
Het gebruik van de cartografie ter illustratie van statistische gegevens stamt uit de 19de eeuw. Ik wil hier enkele voorbeelden bespreken. In 1854 werd Londen getroffen door een ernstige cholera epidemie. De Londense arts John Snow (1813–1858) had in 1849 al het vermoeden geuit dat er een relatie bestaat tussen het drinken van vervuild drinkwater en het optreden van cholera. Maar het kostte hem veel moeite om anderen hiervan te overtuigen. Toen de epidemie uitbrak gaf hij op een kaart van het getroffen district de sterfgevallen weer. Zo wilde hij het verband aantonen tussen het optreden van de ziekte en een waterpomp in Broad Street waarvan hij vermoedde dat die was besmet.

De zwarte balkjes op de kaart geven de sterfgevallen aan. De waterpompen zijn op de kaart weergegeven met een symbool en het woord ‘pump’. De waterpomp van Broad Street (op de kaart gelegen vlak bij de ‘d’ van de straatnaam) ligt als het ware in het epicentrum van het gebied met de meeste sterfgevallen. Toen John Snow met enige moeite de autoriteiten kon overhalen de pomp buiten gebruik te stellen was de epidemie in dit deel van Londen snel voorbij. Waar hij met een theoretische verhandeling niet in slaagde lukte het hem uiteindelijk wel met zijn kaart.
De Fransman Charles Joseph Minard (1781–1870) kun je beschouwen als de man die de ‘infographics’ heeft uitgevonden. Hij wilde laten zien dat je met het grafisch visualiseren van gegevens een krachtig instrument in handen hebt om iets duidelijk te maken. Ik neem als voorbeeld uit onze tijd een actuele kaart over de vluchtelingenstroom naar Europa.

De dikte van de pijlen staat voor de aantallen, de kleur voor de route die de vluchtelingen nemen. Vergelijken we deze afbeelding met de kaart van Minard uit 1862 over de migratiestromen van die tijd, dan kun je constateren dat er eigenlijk niets is veranderd in de techniek. In het verschijnsel van migratie eigenlijk ook niets (behalve dan de richting van de pijlen). Ook hier staat de dikte van de pijl voor de aantallen mensen. Minard was daar altijd heel precies in, de verhoudingen moesten wel kloppen. Dat onderscheidt de vakman van de propagandist of de reclameman. Het is namelijk niet moeilijk om met grafische afbeeldingen te overdrijven.

Het mooiste voorbeeld van een cartografische weergave van getalsmatige gegevens is de kaart die de desastreuze militaire veldtocht van het leger van Napoleon naar Rusland laat zien. Hier worden de ruimtelijke dimensies gecombineerd met de dimensie tijd, en wordt de numerieke sterkte van het Franse leger in relatie gebracht met deze dimensies. Om de ontberingen van het Franse leger op de terugtocht nog te accentueren toont Minard een grafiek van de temperaturen tijdens deze terugtocht.

Voor de ‘tak’ die de omvang en de tocht van het Franse leger weergeeft geldt dat elke millimeter staat voor 10.000 man. De terugtocht begint eind oktober bij regen, en temperaturen rond het vriespunt. Begin november gaat het vriezen. Op 14 november is het leger bij Smolensk en vriest het al 17 graden (omgerekend in Celsius). Eind november en begin december wordt het helemaal bar met temperaturen beneden -20 graden Celsius. Deskundigen op het gebied van visuele weergave van kwantitatieve informatie noemen deze kaart het beste wat er op dit gebied ooit is gemaakt.
Maarten Luykx (1953) studeerde psychologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en computer science aan de Open Universiteit. Hij werkt sinds 1996 bij de Amsterdamse Universiteitsbibliotheek. Al tien jaar is hij actief betrokken bij documentatie van de kaartencollectie.
