In de Doopsgezinde Bibliotheek bevindt zich een bijzonder boekje dat lang verloren werd gewaand en dat ook nu nog het enige bekende exemplaar lijkt te zijn: de eerste editie van de Vijf stichtelijke predicatien van Jan Gerritsz van Emden uit 1617 (signatuur OK 65-1457). (1) Helaas ontbreekt het titelblad, wat de identificatie natuurlijk enigszins bemoeilijkt.
Aantekening
De enige bron die we hebben voor identificatie is een handgeschreven aantekening in een exemplaar van een latere editie (Amsterdam, Gerrit van Goedesbergh, 1650, sign. OK 65-796), waarin wordt gezegd dat de eerste druk in 1617 te Haarlem ‘by Adriaan Roman’ is uitgegeven door Evert Jansz. te Danswyk. Van ons exemplaar zonder titelblad is vastgesteld dat het inderdaad gedrukt is bij Adriaan Roman in Haarlem. Het is aannemelijk dat het boekje voor het eerst is uitgegeven kort na de dood van Jan Gerritsz in 1617. Maar wie was deze Evert Jansz. in Danswijk?
Jan Gerritsz van Emden (Emden? 1561 – Dantzig 1617), was een bekend doopsgezind predikant. Hij was werkzaam te Appingedam (1597–1606) en Haarlem (1606–1607) voordat hij in 1607 naar de mennonietengemeente in Dantzig vertrok. Hij zou er blijven tot zijn dood op 7 april 1617. Na zijn dood werden enkele geschriften van hem uitgegeven, waaronder in ieder geval de Vijf stichtelijke predicatien.
Aanhef van de brief aan zijn zoon Gerrit
Andere titels worden aan hem toegeschreven: Een Vermaen-boekje en Een Spieghel des gheloofs. Ook werden twee brieven van hem uitgegeven. Deze brieven, opgenomen achterin de verschillende edities van de Stichtelijke predicatien, zijn afscheidsbrieven aan zijn kinderen. De eerste is ongedateerd en is gericht aan al zijn kinderen. De andere (gedateerd april 1617, “by Danswijck in de Santgrove”) is een afscheidsbrief aan zijn oudste zoon Gerrit Jansz, die in Haarlem woonde. Twee andere zoons van Jan Gerritsz woonden in Dantzig. Een van hen volgde zijn vader op als leraar bij de mennonietengemeenschap. Was hij misschien de Evert Jansz. die de Vijf stichtelijke predicatien heeft uitgegeven? Heeft hij het manuscript van zijn vader naar de doopsgezinde gemeente in Haarlem gestuurd, die het heeft laten drukken bij Adriaan Roman? We weten het niet, maar het zou goed kunnen.
Het is slechts gissen naar degene die de aantekening in de tweede editie van de Stichtelyke predicatien maakte. Volgens voormalig conservator Piet Visser is de aantekening van de hand van Marten Schagen, boekhandelaar in Amsterdam (1723–1738), van wie de verzameling doopsgezinde geschriften is opgenomen in de Doopsgezinde Bibliotheek. (2) Echter, in diens Naamlyst der doopsgezinde schryveren en schriften, (Amsterdam, Jan Hartig, 1745), waarvan het handexemplaar met aantekeningen van Marten Schagen zelf aanwezig is in de UB (sign. OK 65-1209), wordt de eerste editie van de Vijf predicatien niet genoemd. Waarschijnlijk kende Marten Schagen de editie uit 1617 dus niet en heeft hij de aantekening in het boekje van 1650 niet gemaakt.
Ook in het 18de-eeuwse standaardwerk van Schyn/Maatschoen (Geschiedenis der Mennoniten, deel III, 1745) (3) is de eerste editie onbekend:
“Wanneer dezelve voor de eerste reize gedrukt zijn, is mij onbekend, alzoo ik de eerste uitgaave nooit heb gezien, of tot dus verren kunnen magtig worden” (p. 51).
In nieuwere doopsgezinde naslagwerken wordt de editie eveneens als onbekend of vermist beschouwd: in Springer-Klassen (1977) wordt de editie 1617 niet genoemd; volgens de Mennonite Encyclopedia, vol. II (1972) is de eerste editie verloren gegaan.
