Eind mei 2016 organiseerde het Koninklijk Nederlands Aardrijkskundig Genootschap (KNAG) voor de 10de keer de Geoweek. Tijdens de Geoweek gaan duizenden scholieren uit de hoogste klassen van het basisonderwijs en de laagste klassen van het middelbaar onderwijs op bezoek bij brancheverwante instellingen. De bedoeling is om opnieuw (maar dan ‘anders’) kennis te maken met het vak aardrijkskunde vanuit een onverwachte en praktische invalshoek.

Bij de Bijzondere Collecties van de UvA (BC) wordt de rijke, kostbare en imposante collectie kaarten van het KNAG bewaard. Alleen al daarom lag het voor de hand dat BC een onderdeel verzorgde in het Geoweek-programma. Er werd een expeditie aangeboden door het centrum van Amsterdam.
Het oriëntatiepunt daarbij was een deel van een kaart uit ca. 1730. Aan de hand van deze kaart werd een wandeling gemaakt, waarbij op diverse plaatsen aanvullende uitleg werd gegeven. Belangrijk daarbij was dat op eenvoudige en toegankelijke wijze duidelijk werd gemaakt wat er in de loop van bijna drie honderd jaar is veranderd – maar vooral ook: wat hetzelfde is gebleven. Vooraf werd een introductie verzorgd over de context van de kaartcollectie bij BC en werd een kort overzicht gegeven van de geschiedenis van de cartografie en de verwevenheid daarvan met de stad Amsterdam in de 17de eeuw.

De Geoweek-wandeling voerde ons door het Amsterdam van nu. Maar door goed te kijken op de oude kaart en door de nodige toelichting bij de historische bouwwerken waaraan Amsterdam zo rijk is, kon toch het gevoel ontstaan dat je door de tijd was gereisd naar het begin van de 18de eeuw – of nog verder terug, naar het eind van de middeleeuwen. Als je bijvoorbeeld weet dat er een muur om Amsterdam heeft gestaan, en als je weet dat daar poorten in waren, en als je weet dat er daarvan nog twee een prominente plaats in het actuele straatbeeld innemen – dan komt de stad historisch opnieuw tot leven. Want wat er ook is veranderd: de plek is hetzelfde gebleven.

Een min of meer onverwachte bonus tijdens onze wandeling was Rembrandt. Op maar liefst vijf plekken kwamen we de schilder tegen. En je kijkt nooit meer op dezelfde manier naar de Nachtwacht als je weet wáár de schutters van Frans Banning Cocq hun domicilie hadden. Of als je weet dat Rembrandt precies wist waar ‘De staalmeesters’ zou worden opgehangen, en dat hij daar rekening mee hield tijdens het schilderen, qua lichtval en compositie.
In de Stopera is een schematische weergave te zien van de groei van de stad Amsterdam in de loop van ruim 1.000 jaar.
De leerlingen vonden het mooi. Vrolijk en druk babbelend liepen ze trouw hun rondjes, links en rechts vragen stellend, soms goed op de kaart kijkend, soms dromerig afgeleid, soms onderling druk duwend en trekkend en klierend. De docenten stelden mij gerust: “Ze vinden dit veel leuker dan in de klas zitten en ze nemen er altijd iets van mee.” En aan de leerlingen zelf merkte je soms ook de grote interesse en betrokkenheid. “Rembrandt, meneer … Die … die heeft toch zijn oor eraf gesneden?!”Ik hoor liever zo’n vraag dan geen vraag en reageerde positief: “Het was iemand anders dan Rembrandt … en de man die het wel was was óók een schilder.”

Het KNAG beoogt met de Geoweek op praktische, aanschouwelijke en onderhoudende wijze het belang van aardrijkskunde te belichten. Het is dankbaar werk leerlingen daartoe, door middel van dit soort overzichtelijke expedities te inspireren. En dan gaat het niet alleen om aardrijkskunde als vak op school, maar ook als mogelijke oriëntatie voor latere studie- en beroepskeuze. Daarbij komen grote en belangrijke maatschappelijke onderwerpen aan de orde. Het klimaatvraagstuk bijvoorbeeld, of de wereldwijde verdeling van water en voedsel, of het gebruik van alternatieve energiebronnen. We hopen veel van de leerlingen later terug te zien in dit prachtige en belangrijke vak.
