Zegels, ziel en zaligheid

Sinds vorig jaar zijn er op de tweede verdieping van het Allard Pierson – op de gang naar de ArcheoHotspot – in een vitrine enkele lades met zo’n 300 kleine, nogal onooglijke kleizegelafdrukken. Deze zegelafdrukken zijn afkomstig uit de verzameling van F.W. von Bissing en maken als sinds de oprichting van het museum in 1934 deel uit van de collectie. Toch zijn ze tot voor kort nooit eerder voor de bezoeker te zien geweest. Waarom zou iemand zijn ziel en zaligheid aan deze zegels besteden?

De exemplaren in Amsterdam vormen de helft van een enkele vondst, waarvan zich de andere helft in het Royal Ontario Museum te Toronto bevindt. De latere oprichter van dat museum, de archeoloog C.T. Currelly, kocht zo’n 400 stuks in 1906 van een lokale handelaar in Egypte, die vermeldde dat ze in een grote pot te Edfu gevonden waren. Waarschijnlijk kocht von Bissing tezelfdertijd van die handelaar een vergelijkbaar aantal (waarvan er ca. 80 in zijn privécollectie zijn gebleven).

Edfu is een stad in Boven Egypte (ruim 100km ten zuiden van Luxor en zo’n 20km ten noorden van Aswan). De lokale tempel gewijd aan de valkgod Horus is één van de best bewaarde oud-Egyptische heiligdommen. De bouw van de Horus tempel nam van 237 tot 57 v.Chr. Dat wil zeggen dat het heiligdom uit de Hellenistische periode dateert, toen het Ptolemeïsche koningshuis over Egypte regeerde.

Onze zegelafdrukken komen vermoedelijk uit het Edfu tempelarchief. Door met een zegelring of stempel in een klompje klei te drukken, werden ze onder meer gebruikt om papyrusdocumenten mee te verzegelen. Een brand in het archief heeft die documenten vernietigd. Maar daardoor is de klei gebakken en zijn de zegels voor ons bewaard gebleven. Tezamen vormen de Edfu zegelafdrukken de grootste vondst van hun soort uit Hellenistisch Egypte. Wat ze eveneens zo bijzonder maakt is dat ruim de helft van de set koppen en bustes toont, waarvan het merendeel aan Ptolemeïsche koningen en koninginnen kan worden toegeschreven.

Mijn onderzoek heeft zich vooral op deze koninklijke portretten gericht. Het kan nu worden vastgesteld dat alle koningen van Ptolemeus VI tot Ptolemeus XII op de Edfu zegels te herkennen zijn; en van de koninginnen in ieder geval Cleopatra I, II en III, Berenice III en de beroemde Cleopatra VII. Ook het portret van Julius Caesar komt in de serie voor. Door deze bevinden kunnen de Ptolemeïsche portretten van de tweede helft van de Hellenistische periode beter worden toegeschreven. Want er waren tot nu toe van veel leden van dit koningshuis geen natuurgetrouwe afbeeldingen bekend.

Verder bevinden er zich goden uit de Griekse en Egyptische religie tussen de afbeeldingen op de Edfu zegelafdrukken, en ook goden die voortkomen uit de ontmoeting van beide culturen. Denk aan bijvoorbeeld Apollo en Athena, Demeter en Dionysos, Isis en Osiris, Hathor en Thoth, Sarapis en Ammon. Ook zijn er dieren, planten en voorwerpen op de afdrukken afgebeeld. Op 50 stuks uit de gehele set staan korte hiëroglifische teksten afgedrukt, die titels aangeven van tempelpriesters uit het zuiden van Egypte. Zo krijgen we een beeld van de contacten tussen de Edfu tempel, en andere regionale heiligdommen zoals die van Isis te Philae en Chnoem te Elefantine.

Samen met collega’s, vakgenoten en erfgoedprofessionals heeft het museum sinds 2015 twee workshops, een MuseumCamp project, een casusproject voor studenten van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam, en een tweedaags internationaal congres rondom de zegelverzameling georganiseerd. Met enkele vakgenoten hebben we lezingen in binnen- en buitenland gegeven voor specialisten en voor bredere geïnteresseerd publiek. Er zijn inmiddels een zestal artikelen gepubliceerd. En we hebben met een netwerk van internationaal gerenommeerde specialisten het SigNet consortium opgericht voor de bestudering van Hellenistische zegelafdrukken en archieven.

Sealings, with heart and soul

Since last year, there are a few drawers in a showcase with about 300 small, rather unsightly clay seal impressions on display on the second floor of the Allard Pierson, in the hallway to the ArcheoHotspot. These seal impressions derive from the collection of F.W. von Bissing and have been part of the collection since the establishment of the museum in 1934. Yet until recently, visitors have never been able to see them before. Why would anyone devote his heart and soul on these sealings?

The examples in Amsterdam form half of a single find, the other half of which is held at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. The later founder of that museum, the archaeologist C.T. Currelly, bought some 400 pieces in 1906 from a local dealer in Egypt, who maintained that they were found in a large pot at Edfu. Von Bissing probably bought a comparable number from that dealer at the same time. (About 80 pieces remained in his private collection).

Edfu is a city in Upper Egypt (over 100 km south of Luxor and about 20 km north of Aswan). The local temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus, is one of the best preserved ancient Egyptian sanctuaries. The Horus temple was built from 237 to 57 bce. That means that the sanctuary dates from the Hellenistic period, when the Ptolemaic dynasty ruled over Egypt.

Our seal impressions probably come from the Edfu temple archive. By impressing a signet ring or seal stamp into a clump of clay, they were used, among other things, to seal papyrus documents. A fire in the archive destroyed those documents. But that is also the reason the clay has been baked and the sealings have been preserved. Together, the Edfu seal impressions form the largest find of its kind from Hellenistic Egypt. Moreover, what also makes them so special is that more than half of the set shows heads and busts, the majority of which can be attributed to Ptolemaic kings and queens.

My research has focused mainly on these royal portraits. It can now be established that all kings from Ptolemy VI to Ptolemy XII are recognizable on the Edfu sealings; and of the queens at least Cleopatra I, II and III, Berenice III and the famous Cleopatra VII. The portrait of Julius Caesar also appears in the series. Because of this, the Ptolemaic portraits of the second half of the Hellenistic period can now be better attributed. This is significant, because up to now few naturalistic portraits of members of the royal house were known.

Additionally, there are gods from Greek and Egyptian religion among the images on the Edfu sealings, as well as gods that emerged from the encounter of both cultures. Think for example of Apollo and Athena, Demeter and Dionysus, Isis and Osiris, Hathor and Thoth, Sarapis and Ammon. Animals, plants and objects are also depicted on the impressions. 50 hieroglyphic texts are found on 50 pieces of the entire set, indicating titles of temple priests from the south of Egypt. In this way we get an impression of the correspondence between the Edfu temple, and other regional sanctuaries such as those of Isis in Philae and Chnoum in Elephantine.

Together with colleagues, specialists and heritage professionals, the museum has organized two workshops, a MuseumCamp project, a case study for students from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, and a two-day international congress on the collection of seal impressions in the past two and a half years. With a few colleagues we have given lectures at home and abroad for specialists and for a broader interested audience. Six articles have now been published. And with a network of internationally renowned specialists, we have established the SigNet Consortium for the study of Hellenistic sealings and archives.
